Fort St. Angelo - Malta

While writing The Afghan Coat I found the pictures below quite inspiring. I took them in Malta 2010. The panoramic view shows Fort St. Angelo seen from the Victoria Gate of the city of Valetta overlooking Grand Harbour. The shore-based wall of the Fort (with dungeon cells possibly behind it on sea level) can be accessed easily by walking to the end of the Vittoriosa (Birgu) peninsula.

Below the Poste de France at the entrance gates to Vittoriosa a WW II air raid shelter is preserved. It had been carved into the soft sandstone rock, most probably like earlier Vittoriosa dungeon cells  -the so called Guvi- where galley slaves and prisoners were kept in the times of the Knights of the Order of St. John and later on.

Pictures two and three are views of the basement of Fort St.Angelo.
